源自中古英语 alayen, aleyen, aleggen ← 古英语 āleċġan ← 原始日耳曼语 *uzlagjaną (躺下),等同于a- +‎ lay。与德语 erlegen, 哥特语 𐌿𐍃𐌻𐌰𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (uslagjan, 躺下)同源。中古英语中形似allegealloy,因而出现了意思的交叉。
