來自古法語 ypocrite (現代法語hypocrite)，來自拉丁語 hypocrita，來自古希臘語 ὑποκριτής (hupokritḗs, “演員，偽善者”)，來自ὑποκρίνομαι (hupokrínomai, “回答，行動，假裝”)。本義為古英語 līċettere。
