繼承自中古英語 blame,源自古法語 blame、blasme,由動詞blasmer產生,而它又衍生自晚期拉丁語 blastēmāre,blasphēmāre的變體,來自古希臘語 βλασφημέω (blasphēméō)。blaspheme 的同源對似詞。取代本土的古英語 tǣling (“責備”)、tǣlan (“責備”)。
