源自棄用詞shrick(1567年)、shreke,早期形式screak、skricke的變體(1500年代前),源自中古英語 scrycke,源自某北日耳曼語支/斯堪的納維亞語言(對比瑞典語 skrika、丹麥語 skrige、冰島語 skríkja),源自原始日耳曼語 *skrīkijaną、*skrik-(對比英語 screech)。還見screech。
