可能源自gypsy (「吉普賽人」),出自對吉普賽人總是是騙子的刻板印象。對比jew (「詐騙」),源自Jew (「猶太人」),以及welsh (「賴賬」),源自Welsh (「威爾士人」)。[1]

可能和詞源1一樣。早期理論認為其派生自古希臘語 γύψ (gúps, 「禿鷲」)(/ɡýps/,對比希臘語 γύπας (gýpas) /ˈʝi.pas/),[1][2]「指僕人偷東西的習慣」(由此派生出詞源1),但這一理論無法解釋發音。
