詞源

源自中古英語 drownen、drounen、drunen (「溺死」)，其詞源不詳。

《牛津英語詞典》提出一個不可考的古英語形式*drūnian。 Harper 2001指出古英語druncnian、ġedruncnian（→中古英語 drunknen、dronknen (「溺死」)），它們「可能受到了古諾爾斯語 drukkna的影響」（對比冰島語 drukkna、丹麥語 drukne (「溺死」)）。Funk & Wagnalls認為詞源不詳。有理論指出（如ODS）其可能直接借自古諾爾斯語 drukkna，但《牛津詞典》認為在「發音和各種原因上解釋不通」，除非引入不可考變體古諾爾斯語 *drunkna的可能性。
