詞源

源自中古英語 dafte、defte (「溫柔的；禮貌的；謙遜的；尷尬的；無聊的；粗野的」)，源自古英語 dæfte (「樂於助人的；溫柔的」)，源自原始西日耳曼語 *daftī (「合適的」)，最終源自原始印歐語 *dʰh₂ebʰ- (「適」)。與古英語 dafnian、dafenian (「合適的」)、俄語 до́брый (dóbryj, 「好的」)有關。

對比silly，其原指「很好的；無辜的；可憐的；弱小的」，但現在指「愚蠢的」。

與daff (「笨蛋；愚蠢的」)（過去式daffed）無關，但可能受到了其影響。
