詞源

源自意大利語 arcipelago，根據古希臘語 ἀρχι- (arkhi-, 「主要的」) + πέλαγος (pélagos, 「海洋」)構成，為愛琴海的名稱。愛琴海有很多島嶼，而「Arcipelago」原是指愛琴海的專有名詞，後泛化到可以指代有很多島嶼的海，後面又到這種海中的島嶼。
