源自中古英语 swounen, swonen (“昏厥”), aswoune (“处于昏厥状态”),源自古英语 ġeswōgen (“没有知觉的,死的”),swōgan (“发出声音,肆虐,把……闷死”)的过去分词(对比古英语 āswōgan (“覆盖”)),源自原始日耳曼语 *swōganą (“发出响声”) ← 原始印欧语 *(s)weh₂gʰ-。与低地德语 swogen (“叹息,呻吟”), 荷兰语 zwoegen (“呻吟,大口呼吸”),方言挪威语 søgja (“吹哨,大声谈话”)同源。参见sough。
